About Our Co-operative

Stable, affordable housing built by and for Toronto's healthcare workers since 1992.

Our Community

Hospital Workers’ Housing Co-operative is a member-owned, not-for-profit housing community committed to providing stable, affordable homes for Toronto’s healthcare workers and their families. Our 10-storey building at 100 Merton Street is home to 132 households — a diverse, multi-generational community in the heart of Mount Pleasant West.

We’re more than a place to live. As a co-operative, we are neighbours who govern ourselves, look out for one another, and share in the responsibility of caring for our home. Together, we’ve built a community defined by connection, stability, and the simple belief that everyone deserves a secure place to call home.

Our History & Background

In 1992, a group of healthcare workers from the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) came together with a shared goal: to create stable, affordable housing for hospital staff who were facing the steep cost of living in downtown Toronto. Out of that vision, Hospital Workers’ Housing Co-operative was incorporated.

Located at 100 Merton Street in Mount Pleasant West, our building was designed to put frontline healthcare families within a short commute of the city’s major hospitals along University Avenue. Operating as a non-profit, democratically run community — in connection with the Co-operative Housing Federation of Toronto — we’ve spent more than three decades growing into the close-knit, multi-generational home we are today.

Over the years, our members have invested in the things that make a community thrive: energy-efficient building upgrades, a resident-built playground, and dedicated accessible housing in partnership with local agencies. As we mark our 30th anniversary in 2026, we continue to honour the founding belief that brought us together — that everyone deserves a secure, welcoming place to call home.

What Makes Us Different

Affordable & Non-Profit

Non-profit housing charges that stay stable and cost-based over time.

Member-Run Democracy

Residents govern the co-op together, with decisions made by and for the membership.

Accessible Housing

Inclusive, fully accessible units in partnership with GAGE Transition to Independent Living, plus priority housing for those fleeing domestic violence.

Green & Sustainable

A major Toronto Atmospheric Fund retrofit upgraded energy efficiency across all 132 units, lowering long-term utility costs.

The Play4All Playground

For years, an empty rear lot sat where the original playground had fallen into disrepair — prompting neighbourhood children to chalk outlines on the pavement to mark where they wished to play.

In response, our community launched the resident-led Play4All – Merton Project. On Truth and Reconciliation Day in October 2023, the non-profit KABOOM! and Foresters Financial partnered with the co-op, and dozens of volunteers built a brand-new 2,250-square-foot multi-generational playground in a single day — complete with a climbing wall, dual slides, and interactive music panels.
